Taking the Classroom to the Field

An old student of mine, Bernie Pollack, posted this recently and it seems to be right along the lines of some of the things we’ve been talking about in class.  Here’s the link to the original page:

And here’s the accompanying video:

Local Food Connection at KU

I just checked out this story in the Reading Eagle and am bummed that I missed the announcement that the film Lunch Line was showing at KU.  It’s right up our ally.  The other thing about the story that is interesting is that the article mentions Kutztown University’s “Local Food Alliance”:

Kutztown University recently screened the film for 130 students as part of the university’s Local Food Alliance. The initiative takes an interdisciplinary look at food, farming and sustainable communities, said Dr. Christopher Sacchi, a biology professor and alliance member.

Looks like some of the issues we have been discussing in class are already underway.  Nice to know!  Here’s the link to the full article:

speaker from Farm Sanctuary tomorrow night

Hey all,

Given that we will slowly be moving into our “food” theme pretty soon, I thought this might be of interest to some of you:

Farm Sanctuary presentation by Gene Baur. Longtime anti-cruelty activist and author Gene Baur (MS, Agricultural Economics, Cornell University) will speak on factory farming and other issues Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. in Room 201 of the Academic Forum.  Well known for his successful campaign to reform Lancaster Stockyards, Baur is founder and president of Farm Sanctuary of Watkins Glen, N.Y.  The book, “Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food,” will be available for sale and signing. If you’d like suggestions for integrating this event in your courses, or if you’re interested in meeting Baur, contact VEG advisors Bob Flatley or Bruce Jensen of Rohrbach Library. I don’t know very much about this group, but another faculty member sent me the announcement because he knew we were talking about food and food policy in our class.

See you in a little bit!
