This wasn’t a typical textbook reading and it took me back to a time when people were killed and abused for their skin color. This fight goes into the same category as the courage Jackie Robinson showed. In this piece, I was taken back into that bar the nigt of that fight. I was holding my breath with the other listeners and hoping as they hoped. I had a coke and didn’t ring it up so as to not miss anything. This was history and Angelou made me a part of it.

I really enjoyed it and thought the way it was written, any one of us could be one of those people, cheering on our colored champ. Not only that, but the biasness of its creation, we know that the story was written from a black’s perspective. And why? So we understand, not just the words, but the feelings behind it. The smoke of a lit cigar, the fiz of a coke going down, and the sheer quietness of the place from 30 or so people holdng their breath, afraid to move or to speak, or to even look away. In that moment, the radio was something to show reverence to, because that night, we proved we had a champion of the world!
