As we discussed in class, this reading definitely had a lot of facts mixed with the author’s own experiences. Because of the personal feel to the story and the use of first person narration, Barbara Ehrenreich’s work was easier to read and better to follow than “Corporate….”
I felt that Ehrenreich was very effective in that she almost makes you feel guilty since she really did take part in this. She does a very good job addressing where there is a problem and really captures the idea of submissiveness. I thought that the image of a maid cleaning the floor while someone just sat and watched was particularily good. In addition, she also makes it known that maids definitely work REALLY hard… and are paid REALLY little.
Ehrenreich wasn’t an outside voice; she did it. Since she shares so many stories in her work, what counts as “fact” is not just statistics, it’s personal experience. She effectively persuades the reader without the reader even knowning it.
