I suppose I’ll go along with what most people have already said. The first reading was somewhat interesting. The Author does seem to do a good job at making us visualize the difference in landscape and culture a few miles can bring. However like most of the human race no one really cares until they see it for themselves or it happens to use personally. Although we may feel compelled to tell others about our experience like Kaplan obviously did the only way to make them really see is to buy them an all expenses paid one-way trip down there.
Moving onto Angelou’s writing we can see what a truly masterfull crafting can do for a piece of writing. Instead of just giving us a blow-by-blow much as a history book would do or even as perhaps a more traditional auto-biography, Angelou instead chose to formulate this as a work of fiction, which in my opinion will always capture the readers attention and hold on to it better than non-fiction. A person wants to be entertained and that is exactly what this does in addition to providing an account of history.
