First off, I feel that what I have to say about “The Rusted Iron Curtain” has already been said, so I won’t repeat it. As for “Champion of the World”, I really enjoyed it compared to the essay before it. Where “The Rusted Iron Curtain” showed dismal oppression from an outsider’s point of view, “Champion of the World” portrayed hope from the view of the oppressed. What I think made “Champion of the World” much easier to read than “The Rusted Iron Curtain” was the fact that it was portrayed as more of a story than an essay. It was almost like listening to an older relative tell you about “the good old days”, whereas “The Rusted Iron Curtain” felt more like a lecture given by your least favorite aunt who wants to make sure you know that “other people have it worse than you”. That’s just my basic take on the essays, anyway.
